Would you like to learn about other authors of children’s books? Are you a fan of children’s literature? Maybe you are interested in becoming an author yourself? Then check out these informative links!

I have the good fortune of knowing many amazing authors and illustrators of children’s books. You can get to know them yourself at their own websites:

Authors and Illustrators

Trudy

Jessica Anderson is the author of the YA novel Trudy, which tells the moving story of a middle school student whose aging father develops Alzheimer’s.

Storky

Debby Garfinkle’s YA novel Storky is one of the funniest books I’ve read in a long time. Look for more books from her soon!

Fold Me a Poem

Lauren Stringer is a recent recipient of the Minnesota Book Award for the gorgeous picture book Fold Me a Poem. If you’ve ever wanted to visit an artist’s studio, visit her website and take a tour!

Millicent Min, Girl Genius

Lisa Yee is as funny in person as she is in her books, which include Millicent Min, Girl Genius, winner of the 2003 Sid Fleischman Humor Award. We share the same editor at Scholastic, the incredible Arthur Levine.

Dear Papa

Anne Ylvisaker and I were both lucky enough to have Judy Delton for a writing teacher, and we both dedicated our first novels to her.

Crackback

John Coy writes wonderful picture books as well as YA novels; I’m also lucky enough to be in a writing group with him!

Turtle Crossing

Rick Chrustowski is both an awesome author and illustrator. He creates beautiful nonfiction books about the natural world around us. Be sure to take a look at his amazing garden!

Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Kate DiCamillo’s stories, such as Because of Winn-Dixie and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, fill me with awe. She is a master writer and a kind-hearted woman.

El Lector

William Durbin is an award-winning author from northern Minnesota whose historical fiction includes tales of voyageurs, lumberjacks, and immigrants. A former teacher, he gives terrific “visiting author” presentations at schools.

Writing Children's Books

Children’s Literature Network—This outstanding organization is a wealth of information for anyone interested in books for young people. This site includes lists of authors who give school visits, book reviews, birthday bios of well-known children’s authors, plus much, much more.

Aaron Shepard’s Kidwriting Page—Another excellent source of information for people thinking of becoming authors.

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators—For anyone seriously interested in writing or illustrating for children, this professional organization provides many useful services, including annual conferences and annotated directories of editors and art directors.

Metronet—A good resource for locating Minnesota authors and illustrators who visit schools.

The Purple Crayon— Thinking of writing a children’s book? This site includes some great articles that will answer all of your basic questions. It’s the first place I encourage people to visit when they are thinking about becoming a children’s author.
